While saving up for a travel trip in your senior years may look a little different from traveling than when you were
younger, one thing is for sure, all of us could use tips on how to stretch our budget that extra bit further to, hopefully,
make our trip last that much longer. VisitSaltLake.org shares tips to help you get the most bang for your travel buck.
Travel During the Shoulder Season
Yes, there is a season that is ideal for travel (other than peak season). It's called the shoulder season. Interestingly,
it is one of the best seasons for seniors to travel in, as the weather is often cooler and more comfortable (as shoulder
season usually falls over spring and fall). In addition to this, for seniors wanting to take leisurely exploratory trips
through quaint towns, for example,
Shoulder Season is the best time of year
to do so as there are fewer crowds to make your way through, too.
Enjoy the Perks of Senior Discounts
When traveling abroad, say to the Caribbean, or even stateside, be sure to enjoy the perks of
Senior Discounts,
especially if you're a senior. Again, you may be surprised to know that you can receive great discounts on certain means
of travel and for certain major attractions, even. Additionally, don't forget to do your own research when it comes to
cutting down on travel expenses such as, for example, eating in as opposed to dining out. And if you do happen to dine out
on the odd occasion, be sure to avoid formal eateries as these are usually more expensive than the local cafe, for example.
Avoid Packing More Than You Need To
Spare yourself the hassle of packing for a lengthy trip by keeping it simple. Pack only what is absolutely necessary plus a
few extras of course (for those extraordinary occasions) but try to keep your
Luggage As Light
as possible to avoid
incurring extra luggage costs at the airport. Traveling light also means not having the stress of having to lug it around
with you until you reach your destination and keeping track of all your belongings so that you bring them all back when you
return home.
Remember to Pack For Your Pets
If you're bringing your pet along for the journey, you'll need to ensure you have everything they need. This will likely
include things like collapsible water and food bowls, leashes, collars/IDs, toys, and anything else that will make your
four-legged companion comfortable. And while you can easily take your dog outdoors for an adventure, your cat, however,
may need additional gear. A cat backpack, for instance, allows them to Travel Safely while being able to take in their
surroundings. Just make sure you purchase a backpack you know will keep them secure.
Choose Affordable Accommodation
Indeed, there are plenty of pricey hotels competing for your attention on your next travel trip. However, instead of going
this route, you could opt for a rental instead. You can save even more money in
Expense Deductions by using a portion
of your trip for a business need. Furthermore, vacation rentals typically have proper
kitchen facilities, allowing you to cook at 'home' which can be another cost saver too (depending on where and what items
you purchase, of course).
When it comes to choosing affordable activities on your vacation, be sure to research those which are the most
budget-friendly, but that are nonetheless still out of the norm and exciting to experience. Take
Snorkeling or scuba diving, for example. Certainly,
scuba diving can be expensive expeditions, depending on where you decide to take scuba diving lessons and how much the
packages are. However, there are certain Areas Known for Scuba Diving that can still be affordable too.
See It All With In-Inclusive Tours
Joining an all-inclusive tour is also another way to save on travel expenses, as these tours often have discounted rates
factored into their bundled offers. Plus, you don't have to experience it alone with all-inclusive tours, as you may just
end up making a friend or two in the process.
Plan for Financial Emergencies
Even if you are the ultimate Boy Scout and have packed copies of every important travel document and purchased traveler's
checks, there's still the possibility of a financial emergency. You could lose your wallet swimming off Miami Beach, or
have your Purse Stolen
after dinner in Puerto Morelos. Anything is possible! This means having a backup plan at the ready.
Your homeowners insurance policy will cover your stolen belongings, but keep some extra cash in your room safe, or hide it
deep in your suitcase. Also, research ways to get cash quickly if you're traveling internationally. A remittance service
is a great option.
Traveling on a Shoestring Budget Can Still Be Fun
Planning a travel trip is exciting, regardless of whether it's your fifth or fiftieth vacation trip. Moreover, it's when
you can save a buck that it can feel even more thrilling and perhaps even a challenge too, as you learn to enjoy these
moments even on a shoestring budget if need be.
